Mind-wandering

The mind, left to itself, does not go quiet — it generates thought that is unhooked from whatever is in front of it. That much is agreed. Almost everything else about how to define the phenomenon is disputed, and the wiki inherits the construct at an odd angle, so both facts belong on this page.

The definitional haze

There is no settled definition. “Mind-wandering” has been used for attentional lapses, deliberate task-unrelated planning, free-flowing creative ideation, and grinding perseverative rumination — states with little in common and, in some cases, opposite dynamics. Christoff et al. (2018) and the paired reply from Seli et al. crystallize two responses:

  • Dynamic framework (definitional). Mind-wandering does have an essential feature: thoughts that arise and move in a relatively free, unconstrained fashion — not held on track by deliberate goals, and not clamped by automatic constraints such as affective salience or perseveration. On this view, rumination and deliberate planning are not mind-wandering, because they are constrained.
  • Family-resemblances (cluster concept). Mind-wandering is an umbrella family with no privileged feature; membership is graded and probabilistic, some cases more prototypical than others. Rumination and deliberate planning are mind-wandering, because researchers have called them so.

Both sides accept graded membership; the live disagreement is whether some features are more defining than others. The full argument, including the test cases that separate the views, is on how-should-mind-wandering-be-defined.

Why a wiki about the body has this page

Two of the wiki’s studies operationalize mind-wandering directly:

  • Banellis et al. (2026) extended the MDES thought-probe battery with eight bodily items and found body-wandering — a stable interindividual dimension of how much the resting stream of thought is about the body (breath, heart, stomach, bladder, skin, movement). Its neural signature is thalamo-somatomotor, not the DMN the mind-wandering literature is built on.
  • Weng et al. (2020)‘s EMBODY framework trains fMRI classifiers on instructed internal-attention states including “mind-wandering,” then decodes an uninstructed meditation second-by-second into breath / mind-wandering / self-referential thought.

In both, mind-wandering is a sampled or decoded operational category, never a defined one. Christoff et al. name the assumption underneath: whether the drift toward the body those studies capture is “mind-wandering” at all depends on the unsettled definition — and, on the dynamic view, on whether that drift is free or constrained.

The distinction the wiki keeps re-deriving

The dynamic framework’s free/constrained cut is the same shape the wiki reaches from the clinical and contemplative literatures under other names: narrative vs experiential self-reference, elaborative vs sensory reactivity, decentering, cognitive-reactivity. Across all of them the recurring claim is that what matters is not the content of thought but whether the mind is locked-on and elaborating versus loosely engaged with the present. Mind-wandering research supplies the general-cognition version of that distinction; body-wandering supplies the embodied one.

This is also why the construct lands on is-more-interoceptive-awareness-better. Spontaneous attention to the body correlates with lower symptoms in Banellis et al. even though it feels bad in the moment — but only if “body-wandering” means free drift toward bodily sensation. If it includes constrained rumination on a symptom, the sign could flip, and the definitional debate says these two should not be counted together.

Attention captured through the breath, not the probe (Treves et al. 2025)

Treves et al. (2025) add a third operationalization, and it is the wiki’s first first-hand neural study of on-task/off-task attention rather than a citation. Instead of thought probes, it uses a breath-counting task with breath-belt physiology to timestamp lapses (miscounts, resets) as off-task periods, and asks which dynamic brain states accompany attention versus inattention in 72 high-rumination adolescents.

Two results bear on this page. First, the perceptual-decoupling account — mind-wandering as attention withdrawn from sensory input (Schooler et al. 2011; Kucyi et al. 2021) — meets a wrinkle: breath counting uniquely engaged a cognitive-control↔somatomotor coupled state, read speculatively as attention toward the body coupling regions that usually decouple. That is the same directional puzzle body-wandering raises — drift toward the body engages sensorimotor circuitry. Second, and cautionary: the brain states that marked “doing the breath task” were not the states that marked moment-to-moment attention within it, and none predicted individual differences in attentiveness. Mind-wandering as an operational category once again resists a clean, universal neural signature — consistent with Weng et al. (2020)‘s finding that the patterns are highly person-specific.

What the wiki does not yet hold

The canonical empirical mind-wandering literature — Smallwood & Schooler’s programme, the DMN account, the executive-control and meta-awareness lines, Killingsworth & Gilbert’s “a wandering mind is an unhappy mind” — is present here mostly by citation. Treves et al. (2025) is the first study to bring on-task/off-task attention first-hand, though via breath counting rather than classical probe-caught mind-wandering. This page remains a definitional and connective stub, not a survey of the field: its content is the dispute over the concept plus the wiki’s own embodied operationalizations; the rest is flagged as absent.
